Underwater Lab located at Stronghold 25 on Nangan is part of the Matsu Biennial that opened 23 September 2023. Curated by Eva Lin it includes work by Chihhung Liu, Ho Yen-Yen and CHANG Yung-Ta.

Together with underwater acoustician Sven Gastauer, we brought the oceanographic and art perspective to the Underwater Lab and the island of Nangan.

The way down into the bunker is slippery. We switched off the lights, and blocked the small windows that have been used by soldiers to watch the sea. Leaving only a tiny hole in the blocked out windows we projected the outside view on the inside. Visitors find themselves inside a bunker camera obscura. Inside a wall is a 1 hour video showing shadowgraph images recorded by Zooglider during one dive up from 400m. The sound of the video is the acoustic response recorded by Zooglider rendered audible by lowering the frequency range into the audible range.

In the new built part I installed soft data for visitors to sit on. The ceramics show the echo of the golden croaker.
