LaLa La Photo pour L’Oeuvre

Like with a sneeze you never know when it will be triggered. A motion sensor activates the work, but a microcomputer adds a randomness to it, deciding which nozzles will, or will not, squirt a tiny bit or a full load.

As Within As Without, 2020

As Within As Without was at Prospects & Concepts, an annual exhibition during the international art fair Art Rotterdam organised by the Mondriaan Fonds and this year was curated by Johan Gustavsson.

I was onboard the 5-day enterprise with my work As Within As Without. Here are just a few impressions:

Ready When You Are has something to say. It’s a work of art that asks questions. A passer-by can stop to chat, sit down or remain standing. Ready When You Are is made from foam strips. They are the 3dimensional twin of the colour-pencil sketch. An idea sketched onto the floor. The foam is protective, it forms a comfy shelter. And restricts interaction.
Ready When You Are was shown together with work of Boyd de Jong in hannah art space, Amsterdam.

I used every plinth to built an excess of authority in the image of a high-rise building. Standing on the bridge that crosses the room, you can look down on the cityscape that they form. On the lower ground you find fragments of a city in ruins, a ghost town, where not much is happening anymore.

The Engine Behind

Looking for some cozy insecurity I followed the layout of a fallen apart car; four wheels, an engine, seat, lights, bodywork. But the crutch is missing the injured, the circle is missing its center and the saddle its rider. The Engine Behind is completed by the visitor, who, unsure what to step on, climbs over the objects on the floor.

I am drawing a series of portraits of people that I ask to send me their selfie through WhatsApp and draw it off the mobile phone. The expression of their faces in reaction to an unknown story get recorded.

Able to move freely and hovering past other works and in between of people it demanded attention for its hiddenness. The thin fabric depicting a brick-wall is protection and exposure at the same time.

The work is made of fabric, in-line skates and Claudine. It is operated in a way that it seems to hover. The lack of the up-and-down of walking working towards the objectifying of the performer. Standing still in an art setting it can be mistaken for an inanimate object, not for long, however.

Pavilion – Gerrit Rietveld Academie Amsterdam – in collaboration with Nicola Godman

This exhibition was made possible by Lectoraat Art & Public Space

From the dark basement of the Rietveld, the slides of the SKOR archive were brought to light! During a three-day event the many treasures of below shone in the public eye. The project Diascope took as its aim to surface and create publicity for what rests inside drawers, folders and boxes.

On Wednesday 16 November, Diascope presented slides form the Volksgezondheid (health care) collection. Carried out in hospitals and care homes they are to be found in semi-open buildings. During the opening ceremony they were shown publicly and highlighted through projection, turning the pavilion into a light-box.

On Thursday 17 November Diascope – Séparée followed the cataloguing done by SKOR. Strapping it to a tight schedule, 15 minutes per year, covering 18 years it linked the archival system to its accessibility.

SKOR | Foundation for Art and Public Domain realized works of art in public space from 1980 to 2012. After being shut down the Gerrit Rietveld Academie started housing its archive. Being composed of artist’s documentation, portfolios and bureaucracy, it found a shadowy existence in room S08 of the basement.
